Despite its grassroots ethos, a councillor has stated that the nightclub has “lost the good will of the community”. However, in a statement written on Facebook, the venue has released their version of events, detailing instances in which improper procedures were followed by Manchester City Council – in what the venues believes was a determined attempt “to remove us from existence” and furthermore “destroy all nightlife that is not in the city centre”.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Rusholme councillor Rabnawaz Akbar stated that the impending closure is a “real shame” but added that the club had failed to “comply with basic rules and regulations”.
The venue is renowned for hosting a plethora of diverse artists and to see yet another significant asset to Manchester’s nightlife shut down will be a huge loss to the city’s underground scene. A petition, created following the venue’s announcement on Sunday, has already amassed over 12,500 signatures. One petitioner, Roddy Bobongo, writes: “Antwerp Mansion has already reduced its capacity to align with health and safety, this is just yet another ridiculous attack on Manchester’s nightlife and follows in the footsteps of Sound Control and Sankeys. If the council is not careful, the city’s fantastic reputation for nightlife will be eroded.”
